Chapter 4 Summary
This chapter introduces the characters of Ma and Pa, the old villagers mentioned at the beginning of the story. Ma and Pa sit in their small house and discuss the recent floods, the impact the water will have on the village and in the memories of the children who have experienced it. As the old married couple discusses the rumors of the possibility that the landlord is going to sell his land, Ma undresses to retire for the night. Pa recalls his youth when he worked in Panama and made lots of money. Ma wishes that the young men of the village had the opportunities that Pa once had.
Pa suggests that the young men should go to America where the money flows like the floodwaters in the village. Pa shares his concerns about losing the house if the land is sold and Ma tells him not to trust Mr....
