Summary

Håkan proceeds to ride through the wilderness alone, avoiding all contact with civilization. In the spring, he comes to a small settlement and finds that he has no wish to reconnect with any type of civilization following the violent events at the caravan. He therefore decides to find a remote place in the wilderness to live out his life alone. For months spends his days camping foraging in one isolated place. One day, he is bitten by a mistake and nearly dies. He recovers and realizes that he does not wish to die alone in the wilderness, so he begins to travel east once more. In Chapter 16, winter begins to arrive once more, and he arrives at what appears to be a small city. The local sheriff recognizes him as the now semi-legendary Hawk and has him arrested.
