Summary

The Prologue takes place on November 5, 1976, in Klickitat County, Washington. Buzz Almond is a deputy for the county's sheriff's office when he answers a call at the home of Earl and Nettie Kanasket who report that their daughter, Kimi, has not returned home from work. She is a senior at Stoneridge High School and works at the Columbia Diner. She calls her parents as she is leaving work each night and then walks home. Earl is an elder of the Klickitat tribe. Kimi's brother, Elan, says Kimi recently broke up with her boyfriend, an amateur boxer named Tommy Moore. They had been dating about six months and Elan does not know what caused the breakup.
