Summary

In Chapter 16, they leave the camp in a semi truck. A few hours later, they leave the truck in favor of a bus. A boy named Zach tells the children he will be their driver on “this epic quest” and invites them to “give Nevada the finger as we pull away” (315). His comments make some of the children smile. Ruby sits by Rosa and deliberately calls her by name in order to remind her that she is more than a number. Rosa says the children at Oasis are “still broken” (315), but Ruby assures her they are not, and that her mother wants her back.
