Chapter 3 Summary

Memoir--the narrator is with his unit in combat near Mons, France. They are dug in near a garden wall, and when a German soldier, heavily laden with his equipment, tries to climb over the wall, they shoot him. The narrator is close enough to see the expression of surprise on the solder's face as he is hit with the bullet. Then three other German soldiers try to climb over the wall in another place, and they are shot as well. The narrator concludes by saying, "They all came just like that," suggesting that many other attacking German soldiers were shot in the same way.

Story--The story, "The End of Something," that follows the foregoing memoir takes place in Northern Michigan near Charlevoix. Nick Adams is a young man now, and the story begins as.....
