Jim Nolan gathers his few belongings in a small case and takes his leave of his rooming house, telling the landlady he will not return and letting her know that he understands that she will not return any of the week advance he gave her. She tells him he is always welcome back and emphasizes that she has many who return year after year. She always finds room for them. He walks to an office on the second floor of a run-down building in the rapidly fading business section of town. He has an appointment with Harry Nilson.
