Chapter 12 Summary

When morning comes, Mac seems more cheerful. He has found an American flag to drape over the coffin. It is still raining, and breakfast is plain oatmeal. Doc changes Jim's bandage and tells him that old Dan is upset because he doesn't think he will get to go to the funeral. Mac asks if they can put him on a truck. Doc Burton says yes, but it will hurt him like the devil. Burton says that they should make like they will take him, and then when they lift him, he will beg off for the pain. He just feels that Joy stole the show from him. Mac mentions that they want to time the funeral to tie up the noon traffic in town. Doc remarks that if he were bossing the other.....
