Chapter 9 Summary

On the morning of the second day of the strike, the men organize a picket to meet the train. They leave about a hundred men behind to guard the camp. Burke wants to start a fight right away. Mac says that they should talk first and that he has seen half a trainload go over to the strikers from just talking. As the men march to the train station, ten deputies on motorcycles spaces themselves along the line of marchers, and a big open car goes ahead and parks across the road loaded with armed men.

As the strikers walk, Mac is hoping for something to make the men mad soon. He is afraid that the whole thing will just fizzle out. As the marchers wait for the incoming train, Mac notices something strange.....
