Jake

Jake is the main character in this novel. He is actually the only character who is real with other characters apparently representing facets of his personality. In real time, Jake was an older man who worked as a custodian at a high school, the school where he killed himself.

Jake appears to suffer with some sort of mental illness, perhaps either schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder. Because his main psyche has fragmented into different personalities,. At one point, however, the fragment of his personality that represents his mother reports that she hears voices. This symptom of hearing voices makes Jake’s disorder sound like it might be schizophrenia.

In Jake’s story, he puts himself back in the time period when he was still working at a lab. It was a time in his life when he had ventured to the campus pub where he saw a girl...
