Chapter 2 Summary

Madison Fountain is at the Emmer's house where she is now living. It is Friday and she has stayed home from school faking an illness. She is thinking about the day before, which was her father's birthday. The Emmer's are Madison's godparents and so they took her in after the incident that took both her parents. Now she feels as if they can't wait for her to leave.

Smithy is a ninth grader at a boarding school she applied to and was accepted at after her parents died. She's planning on spending Thanksgiving and Christmas break with her roommate Kate's family. She's also remembering that yesterday would have been their dad's 41st birthday and that she didn't call any of her siblings yesterday. Smithy is named for her mother's maiden, which was Smith.
