Summary

May and June spend a warm afternoon looking for their lost cat Rocket and playing the child’s fortune-telling game, MASH. “2024” zooms the novel far into the future; where May is dead, June has still not been heard from, and Jenny collapses in prison at the age of 70. Elizabeth still lives with Jenny, and she realizes that Jenny’s 30 year parole hearing is coming up soon. She knows Jenny will not accept the hearing, so Elizabeth decides to forge a letter to the committee, posing as Jenny. She wants Jenny to see the outside world again before she dies, knowing that she, herself, will die in prison serving her two life sentences. The next year, in Chapter “May 2025”, the prison contacts Ann at the house and informs Jenny’s family that she is up for parole. Ann responds by selling the house and the...
