Summary

Readers meet Adam for the first time in “1973”. It has already been announced that Adam dies when he freezes to death outside after getting lost on his way home. In “1973”, Adam is lost on a freezing cold night. He is trapped in his own confusing memories, which play tricks on him. He thinks he knows where he is, but Adam cannot remember which farm is his. He stops to contemplate which memory is real and which memory will help him go to the correct house. At the end of the chapter, Adam sits down in the cold to rest.

Jenny receives a letter informing her of Wade’s death in “2010-2011”. Wade died a year earlier, on December 27, 2009 and was buried next to his father in Grangeville, Idaho. This is the first letter Jenny has ever received in prison. She becomes numb and depressed...
