Summary

Ann moves from Poole, England to Silver Valley, Idaho when she is 28 years old. She teaches choir at a charter school in the area. One day, she sees a young student named June place a gift in a boy’s locker, and Ann goes to inspect the box. It contains a knife with ornate engravings. This alarms Ann, and she calls June’s parent, Wade Mitchell. Wade explains that June has had social problems at other schools. She falls in love with older boys and steals things from the house to give to them. In this case, June stole an engraved knife Wade had made for his wife, Jenny. He asks Ann to give him piano lessons, and the two of them work together comfortably but with little conversation.
