Captain Perry surfaces and members of his crew round up as many of the Ice Station occupants as possible in the short window of time they have before the Drakon arrives. Some still in the crawl space could not be reached in time and are left behind with a small contingent of armed men from the sub. One of them is Amanda, who is still in the beasts' cave next to the body of Lacy. The beast seemed to sense the sonar scan and fled from it. Terrible realization dawns as she recalls that whales sense sonar. Turning off her flashlight, she sees its shadow. She turns the light on and tosses it to Lacy's body, hoping it will distract the creature. Her insulated suit leaves only her face exposed and she cools that with ice just as a living Grendel enters. ...
