Summary

Chapter 29 returns to the third-person point of view. It is February 18, 1920. Anna revives coughing and gagging when a policeman slaps her cheek. He takes her to the police station because she will not tell him her name. At the police station, she falls unconscious from a bench. When Anna wakes again as two nurses are taking inventory of her scars and asking her how many times she tried to kill herself. The nurses believe they count six bullet wounds and eighteen stab wounds.

Chapter 30 returns to the first-person point of view of Anastasia. It is July 17. Anastasia has been told the White Army is coming to rescue them. That night, however, Tomas wakes Anastasia and tells her that Yakov has plans to shoot her family. He begs her to come with him but she tells him that...
