Summary

Chapter 18 returns to first-person narration of Anastasia. She reports that since the Red Guard has taken over, Tomas can no longer be attentive to her. Yakov put an additional 30 soldiers in the house to watch over the family. Semyon has found favor with Yakov and has been given charge of the house.

A week after the Red Guard takes charge, Yakov announces that Vladimir Lenin will pay only a small stipend to the family, none for the servants. When Anastasia learns that Lenin has suggested that their servants be shot, she finally recognizes how dire their situation is.

Three weeks later, Dr. Botkin sends his children, Gleb and Tanya, away. Anastasia gives them a photo album of the Royal family as a parting gift.
