Chapter Three, "Reason" Summary
Six months later, Donovan and Powell have been assigned to work on a space station engineered to capture solar energy and send it in the form of concentrated energy beams to Earth, various space stations, and other planetary outposts, all of which use the beam as a power source. They are assisted by a new model of robot, the QT-1, or "Cutie," a robot, who refuses to accept both that he was created by humans and Powell's explanation of the nature of the universe. He announces his determination to reason through both sets of circumstances to come up with an explanation that makes logical sense.
Over the next few days Donovan and Powell begin to suspect that a powerful electronic storm is building, a storm that has the potential to interrupt the energy beam being sent to Earth. Their process of calculation of when and how the storm will hit...
