Chapter One, "Robbie" Summary

A little girl, named Gloria, plays hide-and-seek with her non-verbal robot, Robbie. Gloria is demanding, temperamental, and manipulative, but Robbie is the perfect playmate. He gives her what she wants, within reason, and withholds what she wants, when she behaves inappropriately. This last tactic doesn't always work. At one point, when Robbie refuses to give her a piggyback ride, she threatens to stop telling him stories. Robbie immediately relents and gives her the ride she asks for. As a reward, Gloria tells him his favorite story, "Cinderella." The story is interrupted by Mrs. Weston, who tells Gloria it's time to come in for the night. Gloria says she's not finished her story and comes close to having a tantrum, but Mrs. Weston insists and threatens to keep her from seeing Robbie the next day. Gloria agrees to her mother's terms.

Later that night, Mrs. Weston interrupts Mr. Weston's cherished private...
