Part I, Chapter 5 Summary

Robert panics as he realizes that he has been away from the house longer than he thinks, and is afraid the vampires will destroy his generator or his possessions in the garage (which he left open). Robert's worst fears are realized. As he speeds home at dusk, he is attacked by swarms of vampires, chasing him, shouting at him, and jumping onto his car. Ben Cortman claws him in the face, drawing blood. He runs them over, killing three of them, and to escape them, parks his car around the block. As he walks to his house, Ben Cortman lunges at him and attempts to bite his throat. Robert slams him into the driveway, and then returns to the car for his keys.
