Summary

As Chapter 7 begins, Robin describes hearing pounding on the door around midnight. The police are trying to gain access to the house, and Mabel eventually opens the door, whilst hugging Robin close to her. The police say they are going to take Mabel to the police station and that Robin should come too. Mabel protests that her parents will be worried to come home to an empty house and the policeman informs her that they have been brutally killed by some unknown black men.

When Chapter 8 begins, Robin and Mabel are being shoved into the police station, Robin remembers that Cat is still in the house, and tells Mabel that they need to go back and fetch her. Mabel says no and gets angry when Robin continues insisting. She tells Robin that she must not mention Cat to the policeman. Robin cannot fathom...
