Lewisville, Texas

Lewisville, Texas is where Saeed spends most of his childhood and all of his teen years. The first part of the book takes place primarily in Lewisville, beginning with Saeed at twelve years old and following his life until he moves away for university. Saeed's mother decided to move their family to Lewisville from Dallas earlier in Saeed's childhood because she had heard that the schools were better in the suburbs. This was true, even though they could barely afford to live in that more expensive area. Lewisville therefore represents both the family's financial struggles, as well as Carol's commitment to Saeed's education. Lewisville symbolizes Saeed's childhood and his life under his mother's roof. Leaving Lewisville for university in a different state will represent the start of his independent adult life.
