Summary

Before the first chapter of Part Four, Saeed includes a letter his mother wrote to him in 2007. In it, she confesses that when she was struggling financially and with the burden of being a single parent, it crossed her mind that she could give Saeed to her mother to raise. However, she wanted to do everything possible to keep them together and has no regrets.

In April 2011, Saeed is living in Jersey City where he works as a high school teacher and writes his poetry. He is surprised one day when his mother insists that he fly to Memphis for his grandmother's birthday that weekend, which he does. He still is not close to his grandmother after their relationship disintegrated in his early teen years, but enjoys the visit with his family.
