Summary

In August 2004, Saeed moves into his dorm at Western Kentucky University. Unsure of himself, Saeed closets himself when he arrives at school, though he makes friends easily. He experiments with different versions of himself as he gets to know people in different groups. At an orientation event, the freshmen are counseled against the dangers of peer pressure and binge-drinking. Saeed learns about a girl named Katie Autry who was raped and beaten on campus and died of her injuries the previous year. At his first college party, Saeed meets a gay student named Rob who makes him feel that his sexuality does not have to be a secret. Rob and Saeed hook up and for the first time in a long time, Saeed knows "who and where [he wants] to be" (89).
