Summary

Chapter 3 is titled “Heroes or Exiles.” Gobber fights off the dragons that are chasing the boys as they leave the sea and rush overland away from the cave. When they are a safe distance away, Gobber stops and counts the boys again. While he could hear the boys scrambling around in the dragon cave, he had practiced what he would say to Stoick if a dragon killed Hiccup. He had come up with, “Hiccup copped it. Sorry” (45). He is relieved Hiccup is alive but furious that the boys made such a mess of their effort. Hiccup takes the blame for waking the dragons. Gobber then asks if they at least emerged with a dragon, which is the first part of the Dragon Test. The boys have to train their dragons and then have to show their skills on the Thors’day Thursday celebration...
