Book 1, Chapter 1 Summary

At sixteen, Jenna finally became a woman. Up until that time, she still had the body of a little girl and dressed as one. When her breasts grew in, she changed her wardrobe, showing off her new woman's body. Her father said nothing, and she secretly was jealous of her friends whose parents would never let their daughters walk out of the house showing all their assets.

After attending a Little Caesar concert, she decided it was time to get a tattoo and told her brother she wanted one. He took her and his girlfriend, at the time, to a Tattoo parlor called the Rabbit Hole. Even though Jenna was only sixteen and the sign said, "Must be 18 or over," it did not deter her from getting a tattoo. Jack walked out of the backroom and asked what she wanted. She chose her tattoo, and Tony's girlfriend decided on the same one. After finishing the tattoos, Jack asked Jenna to spend some time with him, but she declined.

Two weeks later Jenna was back at the Rabbit Hole, to change her tattoo. Jack was there and gladly obliged. He again asked Jenna to go upstairs and talk. This time she said yes. They started seeing each other everyday after that. He was a tough guy that Jenna wanted to fix to be the sensitive man she knew he was. However, when she agreed to go with him to a boat party, she would realize that not all tough men have a sensitive side.

Book 1, Chapter 1 Analysis

Her father did not monitor Jenna very closely. This is possibly one of the factors that led Jenna to make certain decisions; even at sixteen, she knew this. When Jenna describes deciding the location of her first tattoo, she says, "I'm not sure whether I was scared that he would react to it or, even worse, that he wouldn't." This gives the reader insight into her relationship with her father.

The reader sees that Jenna is getting ready to make some bad decisions, especially the reasons for going out with Jack. She saw him as hurt, wanted to comfort him and thought she was falling in love with him.
