Summary

In Chapter Four, Gamache and Lacoste arrive in Three Pines at Myrna’s bookstore. Myrna is surprised they’ve driven down to in response to her call, but she is glad to see Gamache. Myrna asks about Beauvoir. Gamache will tell her only that he is on another assignment. Myrna tells Gamache she is worried as her friend, Constance, was supposed to return to Three Pines for Christmas but has not done so. Myrna tells Gamache she has probably called Constance once an hour since four o'clock the day before but has not been able to get in touch with her.

Myrna pauses when Gamache asks for Constance’s name, claiming it may embarrass her. She finally tells him the woman’s name is Constance Pineault. Then, she seems confused when Lacoste asks if that is her married or maiden name. She asks if...
