Point of View

The author uses a third person perspective in the narrative. This is appropriate given the numerous characters in the novel and the fact that there is not one character who is constantly with the others. By using this point of view, the author gives a unique perspective to readers as he sometimes uses sarcasm to explain events. For example, when he describes the thought process that leads Larry to decide to blackmail Davy, the author writes, “The jail turned out to be a good place to think: there weren’t many customers, and so the place was fairly quiet” (189). This perspective also allows the author to easily give readers background information as he does when he explains why Davy feels that he has to kill Larry and, at the same time, lets readers know that he is at least one the perpetrators.
