Chapter 18 Summary

Bilbo awakens still invisible, wondering what has happened, whether he is one of the fallen or one of the victorious. He sees a man climbing on the rocks nearby and calls to him. The man stops, but doesn't appear to see him, and Bilbo realizes he still has the ring on. He takes off the ring. Then the man takes him to Gandalf, who in turn takes him to Thorin, who is dying from his wounds and repenting from his greed. They make peace before Thorin dies.

Bilbo is told what happened after the Eagles came: the Eagles carried away and killed many goblins, and yet the forces of good were still outnumbered. Then Beorn appeared almost giant sized, and eventually the forces for good killed or drove away all the goblins and wargs.
