Chapter 16 Summary

Thorin keeps the dwarves busy organizing the treasure, hoping to find the Arkenstone, the most priceless piece. Bilbo is only a little afraid of having taken it before and not giving it to Thorin, but he has a plan. When the raven brings word that the dwarf kin are on the march with 500 strong, Bilbo the hero moves into action. He does not want war.

He convinces Bombur, who is watching guard, to go inside, saying he will keep watch. Instead, Bilbo puts on the ring and sneaks out of the mountain with the Arkenstone. He heads for the camp of men and elves. Some elves find him when he splashes into the stream, so he takes off the ring and demands that they take him to their chiefs. Bilbo talks to Bard.....
