Chapter 15 Summary

Thorin learns from a raven about the death of Smaug and about the men and elves on their way to the mountain. The raven, one still alive from the time when the dwarves occupied the mountain, counsels Thorin to deal with Bard and pay them some of the treasure as a peace offering and to help them rebuild the town that Smaug destroyed.

Thorin refuses this advice and asks the raven to summon his kinsmen to the north. Then he takes his company into the mountain to fortify the main gate and defend the treasure.

The men and elves arrive; the dwarves can see their camp. They can also see that they are armed as if for war. A party is sent to see if the gate is passable. Thorin asks what they come for,.....
