Chapter 13 Summary

The party stays in the passageway for a long time, but soon they can stand it no longer. They have no air and no food. Since they can't go out through the secret door, they go downward to Smaug's lair, but Smaug is gone. They send Bilbo in first. The usual glow from the dragon that lights the chamber is gone and Bilbo cannot see.

He calls for the dwarves to bring torches, which they do, but they are still too scared to go into the huge hall. Bilbo goes in and climbs on the mountain of treasure. He finds the most precious piece that Thorin had mentioned to him, the Arkenstone, and he keeps it for himself. He has a foreboding feeling about taking that particular piece, but he ignores it for now......
