Chapter 12 Summary

Bilbo enters the mountain alone because no dwarves will go with him. The tunnel is smooth and well made by long ago dwarves. With the ring on his finger, Bilbo continues through the passage until he reaches Smaug's lair. Smaug gives off a red glow.

Bilbo stops for a moment, struggling with his inner thoughts. He must go on, but he is afraid. Onward he goes, and when he reaches the huge cavern where Smaug lies, he sees vast, immense treasures that he could never have imagined, and the huge dragon lying on top guarding all of it.

Since the dragon is in a deep sleep, Bilbo takes a gold cup and returns up the tunnel. He gives the cup to the dwarves, who are mightily impressed. Bilbo is just glad to still be alive.....
