Chapter 11 Summary

The troupe arrives at the Lonely Mountain, where Smaug lives. They are struck suddenly with the immensity of their quest.

First Thorin sends a party to explore the area near the Main Gate. Bilbo is in this party. They observe the wasteland around the mountain, and they see steam and vapor coming out the gate. Next, they focus on finding the secret door in the side of the mountain. Bilbo ponders over the runes on Thorin's map. They spend days and days exploring the side of the mountain. Finally, Bilbo discovers it, but they don't know how to open it.
