Chapter 9 Summary

Bilbo and the dwarves are captured by the wood elves and taken to the Elvenking's cave. Bilbo has enough foresight to put on the ring and avoid being captured. He follows the elves through a magic gate, and he realizes it will be impossible to escape through that gate.

The Elvenking questions them, but the dwarves just say they are lost and starving. The king does not believe them; he thinks they were trying to attack his people. The dwarves are put each in separate cells. Bilbo continues being invisible while he tries to figure out what to do. He sometimes follows the elves out into the woods on hunting parties, hoping to find the way out of the woods. However, that doesn't work. Over time, he learns his way through the multitude of.....
