Chapter 2 Summary

Bilbo wakes up to a huge mess in the kitchen and feels a little relieved that the dwarves have left without him and a little annoyed about all the cleaning up he has to do. Nevertheless, he's also a tad disappointed, as if he had begun to believe he really could go on an adventure.

Gandalf appears again, wondering where Bilbo is. A note was left for Bilbo on his mantelpiece, because Gandalf knows he dusts the mantel every morning. Gandalf shows him the message from Thorin, which says they will pay him one-fourteenth the total of the treasure plus funeral expenses "if occasion arises," and that they are waiting for him at the Green Dragon Inn. They expect him to join them at 11:00 a.m.

Gandalf hurries Bilbo out the door with no time.....
