Physical Abuse

Maggie Bradford is horribly abused by her first husband. Maggie's husband, Philip, is a soldier who signed up to fight, but finds himself teaching math instead. Philip is frustrated and unhappy, so he takes it out on Maggie. Maggie puts up with the abuse for a time, but when Philip beats her three-year-old daughter, Jennie, too, Maggie has to put an end to it. Maggie hides under the front porch of the couple's house and listens for hours as he searches for her in the house. Finally he finds them and fires a shot from his pistol at them. Maggie pulls a gun that she has had hidden and hits Philip with three shots, killing him. Maggie is not charged with the murder based on the fact that Philip made her feel as though her life were in danger.
