Book One, Star-Crossed: Chapters 1-8 Summary

In chapter one, Maggie is on her way to see Barry Kahn, a famous singer and music producer, a year after Philip's death. Maggie was not charged with murder because of the abuse, and the entire scandal was covered up by West Point in order to save their image. Maggie hopes to show Barry some of the songs she has written and to get a job with him.

In chapter two, Maggie arrives at Barry's office late and he reprimands her for it, stressing that his time is precious. Then Barry refers to Maggie's letter writing skills, leading her to recall how she wrote him nearly weekly while recovering from her injuries after Philip's death and how he finally responded with a letter inviting her to make an appointment to meet him.
