Summary

In Chapter 16, Dirk traveled toward Meersburg. A bird told him to go down one path and the gnome-knife in Dirk’s pocket warned him against that advice. In Chapter 17, Dirk earned passage on a steamboat across the water. In Chapter 18, Dirk reached Meersburg. He learned the local Bishop that Pfarrer Johannes had sent him to find was no longer at his palace. Dirk arrived at the home of a wealthy family, the von Koenigs, where the Bishop was staying as a guest. A servant informed Dirk that the Bishop was busy and Dirk must help with the kitchen duties until the Bishop could see him. The Bishop sent word that he would not have an immediate reply for Pfarrer Johannes. Dirk stayed at Baron von Koenig’s estate because he had fallen in love with having his own bed in the servants’ quarters...
