Summary

In Chapter 36, “Samantha,” Sam discovers that all the booze is missing from the guest cottage where she and Jamie are staying. Mack is in the cottage, and he urges Sam to find her courage rather than seeking more liquor. Sam says she is angry that Faith pulled the entire family “into her drama” (336). Mack says Sam could have allowed Faith to leave if she really meant that. His tone, which sounds like “a father reprimanding his daughter” (336), captures Sam's attention. Sam confesses that she is tired of trying to be strong for everyone else. Mack says he spent the night outside. He then makes it clear that he loves Sam, Jackie, and Faith, and that he also loves Lovie. Sam wakes the next morning with a clear head for the first time in ages.
