Summary

In Chapter 28, “Jacqueline,” Jackie calls Bill with news about Cooper's accident. Jackie says Bill should not come to the hospital but he insists. As she drives, she thinks about Sean and Cooper and what the next stage of their lives might look like. She considers moving to Charleston but knows it would not be fair to move the twins. She admits that this line of thought makes her “a selfish” (270) mother. Jackie reaches the hospital and learns that they are working on Cooper. Sean is scratched and bruised, and feels terrible that he saw Cooper but was unable to get to him in time to keep him from falling. A nurse summons Sean to the emergency room to be checked. Jackie is torn, feeling that both boys need her, but Sean urges her to remain available for news about Cooper.
