Summary

In Chapter 12, “Faith,” Faith has a headache and goes home early. She discovers Bitsy is again home alone, this time watching cartoons. Bitsy agrees to lie down with Faith and they nap. Later, Faith says that Bitsy is to call anytime Curtis has his friends over while Faith is not home or if Curtis leaves Bitsy at home alone. They go to the docks for awhile. Curtis returns home late. He is furious when Faith reveals her rules and is about to strike her with a belt. Bitsy interrupts, asking if her mother is “getting a spanking, too” (119). Faith sends Bitsy to bed, and Curtis confirms he has hit Bitsy. That night, Faith packs a few clothes and prepares to leave with Bitsy. Curtis confronts her, reminding her that she has done something illegal, and that she cannot seek out Sam's help because...
