Plot Synopsis

Act I:

The Archbishop of Canterbury, in light of a bill that would confiscate half of the church's wealth, explains to the Bishop of Ely that he has made an offer to the king "upon our spiritual conviction" to make a substantial donation should the king decide to go to war with France, Canterbury and Ely then meet with Henry and several of his advisors to discuss Henry's legal claim to the French throne. Canterbury advises Henry to wage war on France and take back the crown which (according to Canterbury) legally belongs to Henry, and the king makes plans to attack France. His cause is strengthened when messengers sent by the Dauphin arrive. The French ambassador asserts that Henry has no claim over France and presents him with an insulting gift of tennis balls......
