The act opens at the English camp on the eve of the battle. The king and his two brothers, Bedford and Gloucester, are discussing the king's fear of the upcoming battle. Henry knows that they are at a great disadvantage, and he is not looking forward to seeing his soldiers killed. Sir Thomas Erpingham comes in, and Henry borrows his cloak and is therefore no longer identifiable as the king.
He sends them all away to encourage the soldiers. He is left alone to think about what is about to happen. Pistol comes into the room. Henry introduces himself as Harry Le Roy, and he tells him he is a Welshman. Pistol asks if he knows Fluellen because Pistol is going to fight Fluellen.
