Act 1, Scene 1 Summary

The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Ely are waiting for an audience with the king. They have been commissioned to research the king's entitlement to the crown of France. They are waiting in a side chamber of the crown room in the king's palace in London. They are discussing a bill that would take half of the church's land and money and give it to the government coffers.

The bill was first introduced during Henry's father's reign but was forgotten, and now parliament has returned to discussing the bill. However, the Archbishop of Canterbury thinks that Henry is a friend of the church's and that he will not intentionally harm the church. In an effort to dissuade Henry from supporting the bill, the Archbishop of Canterbury wants Henry to reclaim.....
