Point of View

The narrative uses Valencia’s first-person perspective in some chapters an the third-person perspective of Virgil, Kaori, or Chet in the other chapters. This is appropriate given the narrative premise that Valencia fears that she is going to be alone and dreams that she is the last person on earth. As such, there is no one she can tell her story to or who can know her story. The perspective also adds a sense of realism to her narrative as, since she is deaf, she can only tell people what others say when she is looking at them. For example, when Lola asks for her phone number, she must tap Valencia on the shoulder because Valencia is not looking at her.
