Summary

Part Two beings with Darren's arrival in Jefferson, where he met Deputy Briggs. The young Deputy insisted on escorting Darren to Hopetown, saying that "'Hopetown's tucked deep in the woods along Caddo Lake. I drove clear past it the first time I was out there,'" (59). When the paid arrived at Marnie King and Gil Thomason's trailer, the couple refused to let law enforcement inside their trailer without a warrant. Darren tried to extract reason with the couple, but was instead met with racist slurs from Gil while Marnie insisted that Levi's disappearance was "'Rosemary's doing'" (61). Darren tried to convince the couple of his concern for Levi, all the while knowing full well that his true goal in Jefferson was to get information on the Aryan Brotherhood.
