In the middle of the night, Marlow says that he wakes up to find Kurtz missing. He does not make a noise. He just goes looking for him. Finding him on the trail, he heads him off. He carries Kurtz back to the steamboat. He says that he is loyal to Kurtz and that he is distrusted by the manager and the pilgrims.

Marlow says that he resents the others for intruding on the experience he had by being close to Marlow and listening to him talk. He feels that they could not have understood him, but he could. He represents the nightmare Marlow would have chosen for himself.
