On their approach to the Inner Station, Marlow says that he hears a wild cry, full of sorrow. A few hours later, as he steers the steamboat close to the bank, the natives open fire with arrows, and Marlow’s helmsman is killed by a spear Marlow is disconcerted by this death, as the man bleeds into Marlow’s shoes.

Marlow sounds the steamboat’s whistle, which frightens the natives and ends the attack. He dumps the man’s body into the river, and takes the wheel, trying to steer through the smoke, cursing the colonists for firing so much when he needs to see the layout of the river.

Marlow says that after the attack, it was generally assumed that Kurtz was dead. Marlow is saddened by the idea that he will never hear Kurtz. He thinks of him as a voice, and he wishes...
