Kurtz overhears the station manager and his uncle, the head of the Eldorado Expedition, talking about Kurtz and his supposed designs on the leadership of the Station. The manager trusts that Kurtz will not survive because of the climate, but the conversation Marlow overhears leads him to believe that the manager and his uncle are both nervous about the possibility that a ‘man of ideals’ will take over the management of the Station. They mock Kurtz’ idealism and take heart in the likelihood that the climate will do him in before he can disturb the profitability of the Company’s work.

Marlow jumps to his feet, and the Manager and his uncle move away, and a few days later, the Eldorado Expedition goes into the forest and nothing more is heard of them.

Finally the steamboat is repaired, and Marlow and five pilgrims and thirty cannibals...
