Marlow meets the Company’s Chief accountant at the Company Station—he is impeccably dressed, which makes him seem absurd in the heat and the external chaos of the station. Marlow says that things in the station are all muddled, and he stays there for ten days before trekking 200 miles into the Central Station, where he will assume his post as steamboat captain. He starts to hear rumors about Kurtz’ exceptional nature, and his performance as an agent sending ivory—he sends it in prodigious amounts.
